The Achilles tendon, (the tendon which stretches from the heel bone to your calf muscle) can be especially subject to strain and potentially lead to a painful condition known as Achilles Tendonitis (or Tendonosis.)
You are particularly at risk if you exercise excessively through running or walking and through playing tennis, badminton and squash or other sports that require you to quickly twist and turn, stop and change direction which puts repeated strain on your lower limbs. It can also be caused by a lack of sufficient warming up prior to exercise, straining the calf muscle through repetitive exercise, wearing poorly fitted shoes, or wearing heels for long periods.
If you ignore it Achilles Tendonitis (or Tendonosis) could lead to your tendon tearing.
Symptoms usually include a swelling to the back of your heel, tightened calf muscles and diminished movement in your foot.
If you are feeling any or all of these sensations, or if you would like general advice regarding the health of your feet and lower limbs.
